Traveler’s Notebook Unboxing

There isn’t really a box, just a gigantic envelope, really. But I was so excited when my phone rang and I saw the delivery man standing at the dormitory lobby just to deliver me my package that I’ve been waiting for!

I ordered the Traveler’s Notebook on Friday 9th of December. It took them four days to get their product to me (Saturday and Sundays are holiday), so I think they did a pretty fast work!

The most outer packaging

I apologize for the bad lighting and photo quality. I usually take pictures during the day where I can use natural sunlight, but the package arrived at around 8 PM and I can’t even wait for tomorrow morning to open it, so I ended up opening as soon as I got back to my room. If you look closely, you can see that I spent 6372 Yen for this package, including the COD delivery.

The four inserts that I purchased
The Traveler’s Notebook (Camel), out of the white pouch

The insides were covered with tight bubble wrap and each of the inserts and the main leather itself is also covered with many layers of plastic. The Camel colored leather cover comes with a blank insert, white pouch and an additional green colored band. The most exciting part of the leather cover is the more you use it, the more unique it will become since the color will gradually change over time!

Here are the list of the inserts that I bought:

  • 004 Pocket Sticker – Use this to add additional pocket to your inner part of the cover. Comes with a business card slot as well.
  • 008 Zipper Case – Good to store lots of things such as deco and craft paper as well as washi samples. One side has a zipper case while the other has a simple slot.
  • 012 Sketch Paper – I was really surprised to find out that the paper was actually really thick. The perforations aren’t that easy to tear as well so I won’t worry about the papers accidentally coming off. It’s a really good quality paper. Beware that this will make your TN really bulky.
  • 014 Kraft Paper – Basically a book with a brown paper that is usually used for arts and craft. I use this for my travelogue where I’ll just stick tickets or papers that are related to the places I’ve traveled to.
The big pamphlet it came with
And also a paper envelope

The whole package also comes with the big pamphlet that promotes other products that the Traveler’s Company sells. I’m really pleased that the paper envelope is actually quite thick as well. I probably won’t use them, though, they’re too good to be used!

The thickness of the TN with all the inserts

Inserting the books into the leather cover took me some time because I was being careful and wouldn’t want to accidentally snap the bands. As I mentioned above, the TN looks really bulky because of the thick sketch paper book, but I love bulkiness, it makes the TN look more ‘aged’.

Size comparison with the Hobonichi Weeks

The TN is slightly bigger in size compared to the Hobonichi Weeks, but I love the size because it doesn’t feel too big or too small for me. I added the tassels that I bought at Daiso to both of the journals to make it prettier. Hobonichi’s bookmark is already unraveling so I needed something to prevent the unraveling from worsening as well. 😥

That’s the end of the ‘unboxing’! I hope you had fun reading my posts just as I had fun opening the package itself! If you are interested on purchasing a Traveler’s Notebook, you can visit their website to see their products or their online shop to purchase it (deliveries are only for Japan region). If you live outside Japan, you can simply get their products from Amazon or places that are listed here.

Daiso Haul

All the things I got from Daiso today

I was planning to do my groceries on Saturday, but unfortunately we had lessons that day so I decided to push it to today. I stopped by Daiso first because it’s the nearest to the bus stop and, well, ended up buying several things.

Tassels and charms

I haven’t announced it to anyone yet, but last Friday I decided to get myself a Traveler’s Notebook, so I ordered their products directly from their online shop. The package was scheduled to be sent on 12th of December, which is Monday. So while I was making myself excited over a piece of leather covered journal that I haven’t even paid for yet (I opted for COD), I browsed through Youtube for customization ideas. One of the easiest thing is to hang a charm on the string of bookmark of the notebook. I did browse the online shop for the charms, but dang, they’re so expensive. Nope.

Now you know why I bought those things.

Stamps and pads and a storage box

Why would I buy a stamp set? Because I don’t have one.

I used to have lots of stamp collections back in my home, but obviously their rubbers are all broken by now. So yeah, why not a get a new one. They’re cute anyways.

Yay for shiny clips

I’ve seen lots of these clips on social medias and I thought it’s a cool thing to have a set … or two. They’re not as nice as the clips from Tools to Liveby but it’s still quite okay in quality.

Stickers, washi tapes and post-it set

It took me quite some time to get the stickers and washi tape that I wanted because there were tons of them hanging everywhere around the stationary section. I couldn’t show you the motive of the washi tape right now since I haven’t used it yet.

Window sticker with snowflakes!

Actually, it’s supposed to be a moisture absorbing sticker but I’m not really sure this thing will do it’s work, so let’s just call it a window decoration. It took me some time to get those flakes out from the original sticker template but I really love how my window looks now. 😆 Can’t wait until the snow falls!

There are several items in the main picture that I couldn’t show up close because I forgot to take the pics. I bought other random things such as clothes hanger, washing sponge, pasta cap (this thing is a pain to set up), bus/train pass case and lastly a fluffy neck warmer (the real thing costs over 1000円) which I think wouldn’t do it’s job because it’s super thin but I still buy it anyways because it’s cute and cheap, so why not (heck, I ended up buying everything in Daiso because of this reason).

One night lodge adventure

This is a post recalling the short trip me and my friends made during our quarter break to Fukuoka and Oita.

View from the lodge we stayed

Last week, I spent my short quarter break with my four other friends travelling to Fukuoka. Unlike Beppu, the city has skyscrapers and underground trains and definitely a whole lot more people. They have more branded stores such as Under Armor, Forever 21 and H&M which you can’t find here in the small city full of hot springs and steam.

Having not so much money to spend, we just went sightseeing and spent our little money at the first game center we found there (ugh). My friend then drove us to a temple that seemed famous because there’s so many people there.

The main building where believers pray

The temple is located at Dazaifu which almost took an hour to reach from the center of Fukuoka. It has a pretty big area with many shops selling souvenirs and sweets with fantastic prices which poor students can’t really afford.

People, everywhere, in the middle of the rain
People, everywhere, in the middle of the rain

We couldn’t really take our time after my friend got a phone call from the place where we’re going to stay, which is a camping site on the top of the freaking mountains of Hita, Oita. The trip took another 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach our destination and believe me it wasn’t pleasant at all.

The roads leading to our lodge was super steep and narrow as well as creepy. The surrounding houses and cars give you an abandoned village vibe to the point everyone was starting to shiver inside the car even though the heater was on. The camping site itself, fortunately, has real people living there. There were also a group of kids and adults renting their camping base as well. It might be my imagination, but I believe I heard someone exhaled a sigh of relief.

The mess we made after drinking
The mess we made after drinking

And so, that night, we mixed Vodka with orange juice and started drinking. I could only drink a shot due to my stomach behaving weird with it’s gas. My friends drank four and, well, shit started to happen when one of them started crying because of a bad memory. We all got swept by the emotion, so instead of trying to console our friend, we all cried as well in the end. Lol.

No one could wake up at the designated time the next morning.

The next day was clear so my friend took us to a super long bridge at Kokonoe to watch the waterfall before driving us back home to our university dorms. At that point I was so guilty because I couldn’t contribute much to the trip. My friend ended up reserving all the things we need, drove us from and all the way back to our dorms, as well as payed for the expenses in advance for us. He was dead tired but he insisted to drive us home even though we could take the bus.

He said don’t mind it, but I guess I couldn’t. I still had fun but I wish I could repay him someday.
At least I’m glad we all had fun.

Downtown Adventures #2

Downtown Adventures will be a series of posts about my weekends that I’ve spent in the little city of Beppu, Japan. The post will talk about the places that I visited and other things related to culinary. The second post features the place where everyone loves to visit for shopping, Youme Town!

This time, please forgive me for forgetting to take a picture of Youme Town. I totally forgot that I was supposed to blog about this topic. But I did take a picture of a clothing store which is similar to UNIQLO but with a lower and student-friendly price, GU.

I actually came to search for a skirt for my mid-term presentation, but seeing how low the prices were in that store, I couldn’t help but wanting to purchase all of the clothes that were on sale that time. Moreover, it was they’re anniversary (if I’m not wrong), so several items are 1000 yen cheaper than they used to be!

The cat cloth that was used as a background in the picture was actually a multi functional blanket. It could be used as a little blanket, something to drape over your shoulders, or even a little make-shift cardigan. It’s super warm! The price is a bit expensive for me because you could get another coat / sweater / hoodie with the same price. I’m sorry I had to give in to the cutesy!

LuLuLun Japanese Mask

I also purchased this popular mask for 1500 yen (before tax). I heard it’s really convenient to use so I ended up purchasing one. I’ve always wanted to try these masks on! There are 42 sheets inside the pack and you can just take them like using wet wipes. The pink one I got is the moisturizing type for balanced skin. It’s really nice as my skin doesn’t show any bad reactions after I used it.

Lunch at Italian Tomato!
Lunch at Italian Tomato!

We accidentally met our friends when we went to get something to eat. So we ended up eating together at a restaurant named Italian Tomato inside Youme Town. The price was really affordable as you could get a plate of delicious spaghetti, fresh drink and a slice of yummy cake for the price of 1080 yen (after tax)! We all got different kind of spaghetti and cakes. I got a mille-feuille for myself!

Before we went separate ways, one of my friends told me that we should’ve brought our passport to Youme Town because then we could redeem our money at the tax-free counter! To our lovely friend Ryuichi, thank you for telling us but that’s a bit too late!

We then went to a 100 yen store and shopped several thing such as soap dispensers, book holders, and those washi tapes and the dispenser above. It was really cute so I couldn’t resist from getting one. I’m really happy with it, though!

We also shopped for a stock of shampoo ad soap because I’m going to run out of it soon. The soap that I usually use in my country isn’t available for sale here in Japan so I just picked something that smelled nice and cheap as always. Haha.

In the end of the day I found out that I’ve spent around 17000 yen for that day’s shopping spree … Forgive me, Mom!

Well, that’s the end of my weekend. I hope your weekends were great!

Highlight: 3-Gatsu no Lion

This is a post featuring this season’s newly released anime 3月のライオン (3-Gatsu no Lion) ! A story about life and how someone turns his life around from the current situation. For you who loves slice of life and a bit of drama and tragedy, be sure to check this manga/anime out!
Kirikawa Rei
Kiriyama Rei

3-Gatsu no Lion is a manga written and drawn by Umino Chica. The anime adaptation is being aired this Fall 2016 and produced by Shaft. So for you guys who are familiar with Shaft’s animation, you can expect to see several head tilt animations inside.

Simply put, the story is about a 17 years old boy named Kiriyama Rei who’s currently a 4th dan shogi player. He lives alone, financed by his salaries as a professional player. However, in the story’s progress Rei discovers that he’s yet to mature, still stuck with his old self as a boy with a tragic past.

3月のライオンVol. 3

This story is a really heart warming one and a sad one in the same time. Both the main and side characters all had their own complicated situations and back story. Though the plot may seem simple, the way the author narrates this story left a deep impression in me. I could somewhat relate to the situations that each of the characters are in. I even started to think that they exist (the feels!). Reading the manga ahead, I discovered that this story sucks me inside and it’s hard for me to put my phone down after reading it continuously. It keeps making you curious about what is going to happen after the end of the chapter.

The flow and the pace of the story was nicely controlled. The author seriously knows when to put a cheery moment and when to make you experience a ton of different feelings in a chapter! I love the series for that reason! I will probably purchase the manga if I spot it somewhere in the local bookstores nearby where I’m living now. Until then, I’ll just have to save more money for it!

So if you feel interested in this series, do give it a try!

Downtown Adventures #1

Downtown Adventures will be a series of posts about my weekends that I’ve spent in the little city of Beppu, Japan. The post will talk about the places that I visited and other things related to culinary. This is my first post about it, so please excuse the lack of photos that I took!

Last Sunday, I spent my weekend at the town of Beppu with my friends. He invited us to eat at Coco, a curry restaurant. The price and taste are both OK for (poor) university students like me. Like most of the restaurants in Japan, Coco provides cold water for free which could be refilled anytime you want. There are many varieties of curry in the menu, however I only ordered a normal pork curry so I can save my money a little bit (it was the end of the month!). Spicy food lovers could also ask for their own level spiciness from normal (zero) to the highest (ten). Unbelievably, one of my friends picked and finished the level 10 curry!

Baskin Robbins store near Coco

We decided to enter a Baskin Robbins store that was located near Coco to get rid of the spiciness in our tongues. I have to say that ice cream in Japan is a bit more pricey compared to the ones that were in my home country. I could get another serving of curry just by purchasing a cone of ice cream here! I did try my friend’s ice cream and it was delicious. Oh well, I guess it’s worth the money.

Tanoura Beach
Tanoura Beach

My Japanese friend brought us to the nearby beach with his car. Despite being a small sized beach, Tanoura Beach is still beautiful in it’s own way with the little separated island and it’s bridge. We crossed to the little island and took a view of the sea there. The sea breeze was really calming.

The sea view from Tanoura Beach

We then stopped by our friend’s house in the city for awhile and then went straight to dinner at Maruagame Udon. I was a bit surprised when I heard that name but then I guess it’s natural because this is where the famous restaurant in my country originated from. All hail Japan! Lol.

The udon variations here are lesser than the ones in Indonesia, however they’re still delicious. They also have yummy karaage(s) for sale. The food was very satisfying! Our friend drove us back to the university dorms after we had our dinner. It was a splendid weekend!

Online shopping: Wasting my monthly allowance

I recently started to purchase things online at Amazon Japan. Purchasing things there were really easy and convenient since I don’t even need a credit card to do the transaction. We just need to buy a gift card available near the dormitory’s convenient shop and get the things that we want in around three days or so after the purchase has been processed!

My newly purchased Anello backpack

I got a new backpack for myself since my old one was too big for me. It costed around 4000 yen which is a bit expensive in my personal opinion. However, I do like the material it was made of as well as the beautiful neutral color scheme. The internal sides of the bag was really well made too. I’m really glad I purchased this bag!

My friend also got the same brand of bag but in a different color and material. We also purchased a pair of matching boots for the both of us since the weather’s getting cold and my sneakers kept getting soaked in the rain. The weather in Beppu is really extreme! Even an umbrella is useless in a stormy rain here.

Brown two-way boots
Brown two-way boots

We actually got this boots in a pretty cheap price around 1500 yen because of a special discount. So we just bought it in a whim because we thought it was really cute! Haha. The boots’s flaps could be flipped over to make the neck longer so I think it’s pretty nice. There’s a downside to the cheap price, though, which is the hard surface of the innersoles. I probably would have to buy a pad to make it softer for my feet. Oh well!

My shopping cart ... Has increased once more
My shopping cart … Has increased once more

I’m really loving the easy access and purchase, however I think I’ve spent too much money on this online shopping activity. For this month, I’ve expended around 5500 for those two products I’ve just purchased so … I’ll have to wait for next month’s allowance or at least until I get a part time job! For now I could only put those things in my shopping cart …

Life in Beppu, Japan

I finally moved in to the univerisity dorms at 20th of September. It was a windy day and a typhoon passed by the island of Kyushu the day before we arrived.

It was pretty hard to adapt to the new environment where you’re literally alone without your parents to look after you. To me, it was really exhausting to move in and settle down since I’m not used to being so far away from home. The only one to support me here are my friends and the upperclassmen. Almost everything is expensive in Japan, except for the 100 Yen store. Food is pretty pricey as well even though it was said to be student wallet friendly.

I’ve already spent so much to buy my daily necessities and several necessary items such as kitchen utensils and a router to set up my wifi (the one I brought from my home country is apparently not compatible). By the end of September, I’ve spent round 30.000 Yen. Sigh.

I went shopping again at the 1st of October to buy myself a new cardigan and a heat tech clothing from UNIQLO. It was definitely cheaper compared to my country. However, it was still considered expensive. I also bought a tempered glass screen protector as well as a phone casing for my new iPhone 7. They’re pricey AF.

I also made a lot of friends (somewhat) from many different countries. I’m glad that I managed to make Japanese friends as well. They’re really friendly and fun to talk to. Sometimes they’d blabber out words in Japanese which is hard for me to understand, but at the same time I could practice my listening and comprehension skills through their conversations. I also experienced culture shock. Haha. But that’s what made the first two weeks that I spent here really interesting.

Classes will start on the 5th of October. Many people said that it’s gonna be super tough but I’ve gotta keep a positive mind that I’d be able to surpass my first semester in this university! Wish me luck!

Belitung Island, Indonesia

I originally wasn’t planning to post about this trip that I made this summer holiday, but since I really enjoyed the moments that I spent there I decided to make a little review about this tour.

This tour was organised by BelitungIsland.com, a local tour group in Belitung. Our trip lasted for four days and three nights. We stayed in Billiton Hotel and I must say the hotel was a good one in both service and dining with the exception of weak wifi. Lol.

Day One

On the first day we arrived, it rained pretty hard throughout the whole day. Most of our itinerary got canceled because of it. However, we did manage to visit Kampong Dedaun, some kind of restaurant and recreation site. We could’ve rented a bike and rode it on the road since it’s mostly one way. Yes, almost all of the roads in Belitung are one way and narrow with rarely any forks or intersections. You’d even be surprised because there’s almost no traffic lights along the road except on certain parts in the town centre, otherwise you’d just drive along the road as if it’s only meant for you to pass.

Belitung cuisine. Yum!
Belitung cuisine. Yum!

So anyway, we only got to eat our lunch there whilst protecting ourselves from the blowing wind and rain. The food that they provided kind of suited my taste so I really enjoyed my meal. I’ve never tried their local cuisine before but it’s surprisingly delicious! Almost everyone went for seconds.

The driver then brought us to a nearby beach to take pictures after the rain subsided a bit. The sky was rather dark because it’s almost evening but we still took lots of horrible pics with our faulty phone cameras. The beach had no recreation tools or whatsoever, but it still offered us a pleasant relaxing view of the sea.

I just love this tree

Day Two

We visited several more beaches (there are lots of it here) and then a Vihara. I liked this one in particular because of the pure white sand it has. It may not show clearly in the picture because of my phone’s camera. 🙄 I wish Dad had lend me one instead.

Afterwards we headed to Tanjung Tinggi Beach, the place we failed to visit on the first day due to the heavy rain. One word for this beach, it’s gorgeous.

Gigantic rock on the beach

There are literally humongous rocks everywhere on the beach. There are also some that are immersed in the sea. I kinda regret that I didn’t wear a hot pants since I really wanted to take more extreme pictures without getting them wet. Haha.

It took a lot of effort to climb up the steep and slippery rocks just to take those two photos above. Despite being slippery, those rocks aren’t that smooth so it kind of hurts to work your way to the top of the rock cliff (I didn’t use any footwear). However the view was really worth it! My photos aren’t lot because that place was especially crowded with tourists and people taking selfies. I wish it was more kind of deserted, though. Lol. But I guess that’s just me being selfish.

Day Three

The most tiring day out of the whole trip. We spent the entire day hopping from islands to islands using our rented little boat. It was scorching out to the point umbrellas and sunblocks doesn’t even seem to help. I kept drinking to prevent dehydration and I constantly stay in shadowy areas because I can’t stand the sting from the sun.

We then arrived at ‘Sand Island’. Actually, it’s not even an island but rather a mound of sand that appears when the sea is tidal. The sand however doesn’t get washed or scattered even after the tides return normal so the little island will always reappear.

I accidentally broke my powerbank by unconsciously stepping into the deeper parts of the water and got my knitted bag soaked and eventually immersed my powerbank. 😥 I was lucky I didn’t put my phone inside my bag as well otherwise it would be the end of me!

The last island that we went to was Lengkuas Island. It’s the most iconic one since it has an old light house built in 1882 by the dutch colonial. The lighthouse is still operational up to this very moment. All of us climbed hundreds of steps just to get to the top of the lighthouse. The view is stunning but I was already too tired to do anything else by the time we reached the island so I took no pictures of it. I’m pretty sure my mom has a few … Oh well.

The night we returned to the hotel, we just kinda dropped dead.

Day Four

Basically the last day in Belitung. We got the chance to try the local cuisine there, some kind of noodle with brown soup. I didn’t really like it, though. I still prefer some kind of noodle bowl that was sold at school. Haha.

Kaolin Lake
Kaolin Lake

Kaolin Lake was the last place we got to visit before we headed to the airport. It was originally a spot for tin mining. The side effects of the mining then made the water blue. I really find this photo somewhat unreal even though I was the one who took it. Lol. The clouds looked so near to the land as if it’s hovering really close. But the blueish color of the lake still made me amazed. You don’t get to see this kind of view anywhere else! I was happy the driver decided to make this our last stop for the trip.

All in all I found the trip really entertaining even though quite tiring. The beaches are beautiful and not tainted like the ones in Bali. It really saddens me when a natural beauty of a place gets destroyed and neglected by others. I really do hope Belitung gets more visitors and renowned but could maintain their preservation as well!

Hobonichi 2017 Lineup

The full lineup of the new Hobonichi covers are out here! I had been looking forward for this since they’ve announced that they’ll be releasing a whole new set of covers last month. I even followed their daily sneak peeks on their website just to satisfy my curiosity.

I scrolled through the website yesterday just to immediately fall in love with these two new A6 covers: Sherbet and Polar Bear.

Image from the Hobonichi website
Image from the Hobonichi website
Image from the Hobonichi website
Image from the Hobonichi website

One of my friends said that the Polar Bear looks ghastly from afar… I must admit that he’s right. Lol. However that doesn’t erase the definition of cute from the cover. The Sherbet version is just my favorite combination of colors, baby blue and coral pink. Hobonichi even set the Sherbet cover as their website’s favicon!

The other cover designs didn’t really suit my taste that well so I think I won’t be purchasing any of the Weeks or Cousin covers for the 2017 edition. That’s a shame, to be honest. I was really hoping that they’ll release more of a gorgeous colored or cute designed cover this year, but nope. I’ve also looked at the Mother 2 covers for 2017 and I still think that 2016 versions are way more better as well.

Price wise, it’s quite obvious that Sherbet is cheaper than Polar Bear. And since I’ll be purchasing the Avec version of the journal for next year (yes I’ll be trying the original A6), Sherbet costs JPY 3,996 while it’s JPY 4,968 for Polar Bear. It’s really pricey for a future university student and that doesn’t even include the shipping fee yet! 😥
I hope I could save some money up to buy Polar Bear, otherwise I’ll have to stick with Sherbet. But that’s OK, I guess?

Whether I’ll be purchasing the Cousin journal will be decided based on how much I use the journal for university. I suspect there’ll be a lot of things to write and schedule down but hopefully I can still switch off to A6 so I can save a bit for money for other expenses. That being said, I think I’ll have to be a little more grateful to Hobonichi for not releasing cute covers and killing me instantly inside for not being able to buy all of them. Haha. 😛
