Getting back to reading Manga

I usually pick up some manga titles after I finish their anime adaptations since I need to satisfy my curiosity. Recently, I’ve been picking up some romance as well!

Jibaku Shonen Hanako-kun

This series is till ongoing with vol. 13 (see header image) being the latest that just got published last month. I’ve mentioned this series so many times on my Tumblr and I can’t emphasize strong enough how good this series is! It’s supernatural, tragedy, mystery, and comedy combined into one. If you’re wondering why I put tragedy inside the tag … Well, read and see for yourself! Haha.

Chocolate Vampire

I was searching for some more vampire romance (out of nowhere) and stumbled upon this series. I’m actually familiar with some of Kumagai Kyoko’s works and I’m delighted to see that she picked up this kind of genre. To be honest, the storyline and plot are typical (human and vampire relationship) and a bit weak for now. It’s kinda hard to see how the story is going to progress as a lot of factors are still hidden and the world-building is limited. But as with her other works, the romance is there. Sadly, this series only has several chapters translated. I had to buy the original work because I wanted more continuation lol. I guess being able to read some Japanese comes with its downside. (Rip wallet).

Momochi-san Chi no Ayakashi Ouji

I started this series because I liked the art. Haha. It’s a supernatural romance that’s actually pretty well written. It has a total of 16 volumes and it’s already completed. Sadly, the last 3 volumes are not translated, yet. The story follows Momochi, a descendent of a strong family with spiritual powers and her encounter with a human that’s living in a house that she’s supposed to inherit. Characters are all loveable and while the start seemed a bit weak, the plot gradually builds up and it reaches a somewhat happy conclusion.

Other titles

As for non-romance stuff, I’m still following Haikyu!! updates weekly. I feel like the end for that series is coming closer and I’m sad but also excited at the same time to see how the series wrap up! My Sundays are basically filled with excitement just to read an update from this title haha.

Highlight: 3-Gatsu no Lion

This is a post featuring this season’s newly released anime 3月のライオン (3-Gatsu no Lion) ! A story about life and how someone turns his life around from the current situation. For you who loves slice of life and a bit of drama and tragedy, be sure to check this manga/anime out!

Kirikawa Rei
Kiriyama Rei

3-Gatsu no Lion is a manga written and drawn by Umino Chica. The anime adaptation is being aired this Fall 2016 and produced by Shaft. So for you guys who are familiar with Shaft’s animation, you can expect to see several head tilt animations inside.

Simply put, the story is about a 17 years old boy named Kiriyama Rei who’s currently a 4th dan shogi player. He lives alone, financed by his salaries as a professional player. However, in the story’s progress Rei discovers that he’s yet to mature, still stuck with his old self as a boy with a tragic past.

3月のライオンVol. 3

This story is a really heart warming one and a sad one in the same time. Both the main and side characters all had their own complicated situations and back story. Though the plot may seem simple, the way the author narrates this story left a deep impression in me. I could somewhat relate to the situations that each of the characters are in. I even started to think that they exist (the feels!). Reading the manga ahead, I discovered that this story sucks me inside and it’s hard for me to put my phone down after reading it continuously. It keeps making you curious about what is going to happen after the end of the chapter.

The flow and the pace of the story was nicely controlled. The author seriously knows when to put a cheery moment and when to make you experience a ton of different feelings in a chapter! I love the series for that reason! I will probably purchase the manga if I spot it somewhere in the local bookstores nearby where I’m living now. Until then, I’ll just have to save more money for it!

So if you feel interested in this series, do give it a try!

ReLIFE: Between looking back and moving forward

My most favorite web manga series, ReLIFE !

ReLIFE is a Japanese web manga created by Yayoi Sou and released weekly on comico. It is my absolute favorite web manga as it has a beautiful slice of life in it. When I say beautiful, I really do mean it is beautiful.

This manga teaches us lots of things through it’s main protagonist, Kaizaki Arata, a 27-year old man with a painful past who was later chosen as a ReLIFE experiment subject. He was scouted by Onoya An and supervised by Yoake Ryo. The subject who underwent the experiment will be rejuvenated 10 years and sent back to high school to experience youth once again with hopes of fixing things that were “wrong” with the subject’s life.

When Kaizaki was sent back to high school, he quickly made new friends and also encounter conflicts that were related to his past as a worker. Through each of those conflicts, Kaizaki helped his teenage friends with his experience that he had as a real adult. This made Kaizaki reflect on himself whether his past actions were truly a big mistake or not. He had always wondered if sticking his nose into someone’s problem to help a person was his biggest mistake that, in the end, led to his trauma.

Kaizaki later on finally realized that his actions were never a waste and that there were people who were always there supporting him. He was glad that he had made the right choice and was able to move forward a bit. His supervisor, Yoake, was also glad that his subject could move forward. In that way, Yoake felt that he could also move forward along with his subject, away from his past.

While it seemed that the main problem of Kaizaki’s past has been resolved a bit, I’m still curious on what lies ahead of the experiment. Since the test duration only took one year to complete, it means that Kaizaki will only have a few times left to spend his moments with his teenage friends. On the previous chapters, it was shown that he didn’t want to get attached to them because he feared one day they would never remember each other again. (All individuals that has a relationship with the subject will have their memories about the subject erased when the experiment ends.)

It seems that this manga has only a little bit more to go! (I really do hope it won’t end that fast, though). But even if the manga ends later on, I will still watch the anime that will be aired on 2016!

Highlights: Shokugeki no Soma

Ongoing Spring 2015 Anime, Shokugeki no Soma!
Ongoing Spring 2015 Anime, Shokugeki no Soma!

Shokugeki no Soma is a manga written by Tsukuda Yuuto and drawn by Saeki Shun. It was originally released as a one shot, but then got very popular, so it turned into a manga series in the end. About 130 chapters has been released for this ‘food wars’ manga. The anime adaptation was then released during Spring 2015 and it totally increased the popularity of the ongoing manga right now.

While SNS is not your typical shonen (it also has ecchi in it) anime and manga, it still appeals to all kinds of watchers and readers. J.C. Staff really made a good animation with this one. I totally love the art and characters that they brought!

Moreover, what most people look forward into this manga is … food!
SNS introduces you to wide varieties of creative and delicious food that Soma, the main protagonist, made. They were all made with normal graded ingredients when most of the other students in the anime used the high quality and expensive ones. The food that were represented in the anime also has it’s original real version!

I totally fell in love with the food! They all looked really delicious and it always makes me hungry! Cooking fans should really watch this anime (especially those who love food!). It has intense situations that is actually connected to real life, and badass characters who make heavenly foods like it was nothing! I’m really excited to see where will the anime end, perhaps the end of the Autumn Preliminaries? I don’t want to spoil the fun by reading the manga, so I guess I’ll just wait until the anime ends!
